How has this award has made a difference in my academic career?

This award has made so much of a difference in my academic career because I am able to continue my education without having to stress as much about finding ways to afford the cost of college. It has also given me the strength that I can make it and achieve my dream of what I want to be.

How I’m involved on campus:

I am so far apart from working two jobs on campus. One at the dining hall (Spot/Barbara’s Place) and the Admissions Office. As working on campus has given me the skills from working two jobs on campus while helping my family too. Also, to be able to understand and work around my schedule and encouragement from my boss. I also plan to join one or two clubs if my schedule allows me to. I have also attended CAB events at the university.

My career goals:

After finishing up my academic career at the University of La Verne, I look forward to attending either graduate school or perhaps to veterinarian school and finally becoming a vet like I have seen my whole life and have cared for my pets growing up. Seeing how they were able to examine the problem and help my pets get better and my empathy towards animals has given me more of an insight into that field and pushed me into that field. Also having two minors in Chemistry and Psychology, Has given me the tools to make these goals a reality. What I love most about the University of La Verne: I enjoy the structure of the university, as a small school makes it easier to get to class and smaller class sizes make getting a proper education worthwhile. Also, the ability to work on-campus might not seem as much but has given me the flexibility to work at the same place I learn and makes it easier as it works around my schedule and my bosses are understandable of that. I also love the inclusivity and engagement the university has and while living on campus has given me the comfort and security of calling the university my second home. It makes me feel as I belong rather than an outsider or just another student at the school.

A Special Thank You Message:

Dear Donor,

I like to take the time to graciously thank you for your donation. Your donation will help me continue in achieving my dream of graduating from college and being able to make a better life for me and my family. It was up until my first year of college that I realized the high cost it would be to attend college and had a few times where I thought if I would be able to finish because of it but with help of so many people and donors like you. Now, I will be able to continue my dream thanks to you. Thank you so much once again, I am forever grateful.

Sincerely, Matthew

How has this award made a difference in my academic career?

Adjusting to in-person school after the past year of online learning has been a challenge, but moments, like the recognition of this award, are extremely encouraging. On-campus, I hold the leadership positions of President of the Latino Student Forum, Major Events Co-Chair on the Campus Activities Board and Parents Chair for Phi Sigma Sigma.
